Make Time to Listen…Take Time to Talk about Goal Setting

Now is a good time for parents to talk with their children about establishing goals for their lives. Explain that a goal is something we want to have happen. When we have a goal, we usually try hard to make it happen. It's very important to think about goals when we have a problem, because that helps us decide what to do. Whenever we have a problem, it's important to decide how we want our problem to end. Goal setting is important for academic success, getting involved in school or community activities, and providing service to others. Parents should explain how using alcohol, drugs or tobacco will interfere with achieving one's goals.
