"Canned Energy - An Innocent Buzz?"
Tuesday, April 8, 2008; 6:30 PM; Emporia High School Library.
A Town Hall meeting to hear what local experts say we should
be telling our youth about the use of energy drinks. Some contain
alcohol which makes them illegal for those under the age of 21 and
mixing the two can be risky at any age. Panel members: Donna
Drake, Counselor/Coordinator, ESU Counseling Center; Gary Eichorn,
Lyon County Sheriff; Joe Garman, Alcoholic Beverage Control for
the State of Kansas; Rochelle Schmidt, Intervention Specialist,
Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas and USD 253; Gary Smith,
Emporia Police Chief; Shelly Wright, Recovery Road. Bring a canned
food item to be donated to the Salvation Army. Funding provided
through a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA)
Keep It A Safe Summer (K.I.S.S.)
will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds
from 5:30 - 8:00 P.M.
Over 50 agencies are expected to provide information on organized
activities for youth, as well as general safety information. Fun
family activities will be provided, as well as entertainment, free
food and door prizes.
EDA has been working with the County Attorney again on letters
to area parents and motel owners about Social Hosting and encouraging
safe and legal celebrations for prom and graduation. It takes the
commitment of an entire community to send a strong message to our
youth that we care enough NOT to allow them to use alcohol
and other drugs.
