Safe
Homes
What is "Safe Homes"?
Safe Homes is a parent pledge program. The pledge states:
- I will not serve nor will I knowingly allow anyone under the
legal drinking age to consume alcohol in my home or on property
I occupy, own or rent (social hosting).
- I will not knowingly allow parties or gatherings in my home
or on property I occupy, own or rent without proper, responsible
adult supervision (social hosting).
- I will establish a clear "family position" on the
use of alcohol and discuss this position with my child(ren) on
a regular basis.
- I will support our school district's prevention curriculum
and activities as well as school discipline policies relating
to alcohol use among our youth.
What are the parental benefits to participating
in the Safe Homes pledge program?
- Names, phone numbers, and addresses of USD 253 "Safe Homes"
participants will be published in a directory which will provide
and encourage parent networking.
- Parents will support each other by helping to resist pressure
from those who do not set limits on their children's behavior.
- When adults join together and take a united stand against unlawful
alcohol use, they feel empowered to do the right thing, and become
more effective than when they act separately.
Parental responsibility when hosting a
youth party or gathering:
- Be a visible host. Tell guests who choose to leave the activity
that they may not return.
- Encourage "by invitation only" gatherings to avoid
party crashers. Using social media to announce events or send
out "invitations" can result in unexpected and unwanted
attendees
- Call the parents of anyone who appears to be under the influence
or is in possession of alcohol.
- Call appropriate law enforcement, if necessary. Do not allow
anyone under the influence of alcohol to go home alone or to drive.
Suggested parental responsibility when
your child is invited to an activity:
- Call the adult in charge of the activity to verify the occasion,
location, and that there will be appropriate adult supervision.
Confirm that the use of alcohol will not be allowed at this event.
- If the activity seems inappropriate, express your concerns,
keep your teenager home, and seek a healthy, alternative activity.
- Our job, as parents, is to guide our children, not to be their
"best friend".
- Establish a clear "family position" on the use of
alcohol and discuss this position with your child(ren) on a regular
basis.

Thank you for your interest in the
SAFE HOMES Parent Network
Please consider signing the following pledge for the safety
and well-being of your children.
All expectations must be agreed upon in order to be a SAFE
HOMES Parent Network member.
TWO IMPORTANT FACTS
- Signing the SAFE HOMES pledge is NOT a substitute
for calling in advance to verify that an activity will be free
from alcohol. Never be hesitant to call the adult in charge.
- The SAFE HOMES pledge is NOT a legally binding
contract, but rather a pledge agreement by all parents involved.

youth.
